Having read the prequel The Neighbour I looked forward to The City, but I found it hard work. Reading the first half of the book I found myself thinking ‘just where is this going?’ , but it’s Dean Koontz so I persevered. The second half definitely livened up and the denouement was quite surprising. The story is written by an adult Jonah Kirk reflecting on his life as his nine/ ten year old self in prejudiced and riot torn Sixties America. Some of the characters are strong and interesting, but I felt some were just not believable. Miss Pearl (‘The City’) for instance. As for Fiona Cassidy, maybe I missed something, but how did she walk through walls into locked and bolted rooms? For me, not a page turner. Three stars.
