A captivating tale covering more than two generations and mixing well researched fact with compelling fiction. Boyhood friends from a tiny village school in Kerry end up on opposite sides in strife ridden Ireland. The story takes in partition under Lloyd George, the Irish Civil War, the Spanish Civil war and the two World wars. There are births, deaths and marriages…and just as importantly, non marriages; these come along at regular intervals and sometimes without warning!
I found this book very entertaining and I learned a lot about Irish history. My generation has grown up with the ‘troubles’ of the 70s and 80s, but before that I’m ashamed to say I was rather ignorant. This gives a clear insight into the problems that beset Ireland before, during and after the time of Michael Collins.
Thoroughly recommended, an excellent story, Christopher Bland.
